Between Tides Public Art Fund Rockaway Beach, Queens, NY | 2026Between Tides brings together six artists—Moko Fukuyama, Ilana Harris-Babou, Las Hermanas Iglesias, Carlos H. Matos, Amalia Pica, and the collective SUPERFLEX—to rethink ping-pong tables as playable sculptures. These works invite beachgoers to approach the game in unexpected ways, transforming a familiar activity into a space for experimentation and new connections. Responding to the diverse cultural and ecological landscape of Rockaway Beach, the artists draw from sculpture, myth, and public engagement to expand the game’s symbolic and social dimensions.
Centered on community participation, Between Tides builds on the layered history of table tennis and offers fresh perspectives on play. Originally a parlor game for the elite in Victorian England, ping-pong later became a global pastime, a tool for diplomacy between the United States and China, and eventually an Olympic sport. The game’s simplicity allows it to transcend class, race, age, and gender, bringing people together across differences. Between Tides continues a tradition of artists who, since the 1970s, have embraced ping-pong as a platform for creative exchange, rule-breaking, and challenging expectations. Fostering shared encounters, this exhibition highlights how artists can enrich daily life in imaginative ways.Between Tides is curated by Gabriela López Dena.

Old School, 2026Aluminum boat, reclaimed wood, plywood, automotive paint
A salvaged boat from Marina 59 in the Rockaways and a ping-pong table top are gripped by a giant sea monster. The mysterious, octopus-like being evokes mythical figures like the Scandinavian Kraken—a creature that has fueled sailors’ superstitions since the 1700s—or the Japanese Akkorokamui—a sea deity said to appear on calm waters before quickly turning them tumultuous. Fukuyama crafted the sea monster’s tentacles from a reclaimed walnut tree and finished them with bright automotive paint, giving them an alluring, otherworldly presence. The aluminum boat, prized in the 1950s for its innovative design, lies capsized on the shore, suggesting the impermanence of human-made objects and the forces of nature that eventually consume them. Through a mix of nautical imagery and playfulness, Old School revisits legends of the sea, reflecting on the enduring power of myths and how they shape our understanding of the vast, uncontrollable forces of nature.Las Hermanas Iglesias (founded 2005. DiMeLo, 2026
Stainless steel, ready-made musical instruments

Each game played on this musical sculpture creates a live composition. Inspired by the artists’ childhood experiences of collaborative play, the table becomes a space for musical improvisation. Percussion instruments associated with the many cultures that shape Queens are embedded in the surface of the table, inviting players to treat it as a music-making object. One side of the sculpture is custom-made and includes a glockenspiel—a series of tuned metal bars whose bright tones echo metallophone traditions found across Europe and Asia. The other side features a set of ready-made instruments, including handpan, tom drums, and cymbals, all of which have ancient origins and continue to be used in diverse settings, from Indian temples to jazz bands and modern orchestras. As participants play a match, they celebrate the borough’s unique cultural mix, varied migration stories, and ever-evolving sonic landscape.Ilana Harris-Babou (b. 1991, Brooklyn, NY)
for those of us who live at the shoreline, 2026
Terrazzo, concrete, handmade ceramic tiles, powder-coated steel

Four sculptures in terrazzo and concrete invite visitors to engage in unstructured discovery. Assorted ceramic beach items, including a book, bottle, and sunglasses, lie scattered across a ping-pong table, disrupting the typical flow of the game. Nearby, a seating area with a beach umbrella holder and ceramic tiles hinting at board games offers space for rest, recreation, and interaction. Harris-Babou’s process was inspired by hundreds of drawings created by beachgoers during workshops led by the Queens-based collective Mobile Print Power along the Rockaway Beach boardwalk in the summer of 2024. Borrowing its title from the first line of Audre Lorde’s A Litany for Survival, the artist imagines the shoreline as a space of possibility, inviting individuals to find their own voice. Drawing on the principles of "free play," Harris-Babou encourages open-ended participation and improvisation, shifting the focus from mastery to exploration.
Carlos H. Matos (b. 1983, CDMX, Mexico)
Tlachco, 2026
Aluminum, volcanic stone, powder-coated steel

Matos merges the physical structure of ping-pong with a scaled-down version of an Ulama court. Ulama, a Mesoamerican ballgame considered one of the oldest sports in the world, holds both recreational and ritual significance and is still played today. The game symbolizes cosmic battles, and its courts, or tlachco, were often regarded by the Aztecs and Maya as portals to the underworld. In Ulama, two teams use their hips, forearms, and thighs to strike a rubber ball, scoring points by pushing it across the opposing team’s end line or by the challenging feat of passing it through hoops anchored to the court’s tilted side walls. Echoing the way Ulama is played and referencing the court’s architectural elements, Matos creates a game that blends ancestral tradition with contemporary leisure. The result is a transcultural experience that connects past and present, inviting players to engage with layers of history.
Amalia Pica (b. 1978, Neuquén, Argentina)
Fair Play, 2026
Fiberglass, powder-coated steel, fabric

Pica’s sculpture consists of eight tabletops displaying the International Code of Signals, a colorful system sailors use to communicate between ships and share information visually. Each module features a symbol from the language’s alphabet, together spelling out “FAIR PLAY.” Their staggered configuration invites friends and strangers to join several simultaneous matches, turning what is typically a two-person game into a multiplayer experience. This setup encourages up to ten people to participate and emphasizes the collective nature of play. Fabric flags suspended between two vertical posts read “COME PLAY,” extending an invitation to socialize and have fun. These flags were made in collaboration with RISE (Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability and Equity) that inspires local residents to care for their environment and community.

Fish Ping-Pong, 2026
Cantera stone

This pink stone structure serves a dual purpose: hosting ping-pong games and supporting marine life. Inspired by housing blocks in the Rockaways, its brutalist form evokes the façades of 20th-century modernist buildings. If submerged, the sculpture would provide an ideal habitat for ocean creatures. Its design—with two large holes in the tabletop and multiple openings throughout the structure—creates spaces where microorganisms like plankton and algae can thrive, attracting fish and other sea creatures. The color pink has been shown by scientists to promote coral growth, further nurturing biodiversity. By reimagining modernist architecture to accommodate other species, Fish Ping-Pong builds on SUPERFLEX’s research into interspecies living, fostering relationships between diverse life forms. Positioned so that one player faces the sea and the other the city, the sculpture points toward harmonious coexistence between humans, urban life, and the ocean.

Gabriel Orozco: Public Nature Public Art Fund JCDecaux Bus Shelters in New York City, Chicago, and Boston | 2026Public Nature is Gabriel Orozco’s first commissioned photographic series and his first large-scale public art project in the United States. The exhibition explores the relationship between nature and the built environment—not as opposites, but as systems continually shaping one another. Vines wrapped around pipes, landscapes formed by piles of dirt and trash, and street stalls filled with plastic animals appear in compositions that highlight moments of friction across forms of infrastructure. Known for his attention to overlooked details of daily life and for working beyond the confines of the studio, Orozco (b. 1962, Xalapa, Mexico) captured these images while walking through public spaces.
Installed on 300 JCDecaux bus shelters across New York City, Chicago, and Boston, the 12 photographs function as trompe l’oeil interventions, dissolving the boundary between image and site. They extend the surrounding city into the frame and vice versa, creating perceptual loops that shift as the viewer moves. In one photograph, a tree grows through a concrete wall; when installed on a bus shelter, its roots might appear to extend into the sidewalk below and its branches into those of a nearby tree. In this way, Orozco uses images as sculptural material to reconfigure the spatial experience of the city.
The works invite viewers to notice situations in which natural and urban elements intertwine in accidental ways. Rather than presenting them as isolated oddities, Orozco suggests that they emerge from conditions that recur throughout the world. For him, “nature” is understood broadly: as organic matter, but also as decay, entropy, and the traces of human activity. The term also prompts questions about what constitutes the essence of public space and how it is defined through adaptation, accumulation, and time. Orozco’s images offer a subtle, poetic reflection on contemporary cities as shared and evolving environments.

disorienting plans Aronson Galleries New York, NY | 2022Is planning for a feminist city possible? What would that process look like? What skills and knowledge would it require? How could interactions between bodies configure new forms of inhabiting a city? Mainstream narratives discussing the built environment through a feminist lens often focus on infrastructure that considers “women’s needs” (breastfeeding rooms, child-friendly public restrooms, street lighting) and call for the inclusion of women in positions of power. However, the conversation rarely addresses embodied strategies that modify the way in which the city is lived and experienced. Rather than offering superficial fixes that only patch up structural problems, this exhibition explores a series of bodily dwelling points to diverge from hegemonic understandings of the so-called feminist production of space. Just as desire paths—alternative walkways that contradict urban planning—result from unexpected everyday comings and goings, these bodily dwelling points suggest counterintuitive routes to collectively shape space.

disorienting plans questions the cruel optimism embedded in the straight line that seems to determine the hetero-normative, capitalist, racist, and patriarchal production of space today. As Sara Ahmed points out, this straightness is enforced by social points of alignment that define what a good life (or space) is, preventing the emergence of possible futures that involve getting lost or going astray. Far from merely pinkwashing urban space and supporting equal opportunity domination—where all genders have the option to become oppressors—the works in this exhibition go beyond cosmetic changes to the city.
disorienting plans is articulated through five bodily dwelling points: refusal, appropriation, friction, tension, and occupation. Simultaneously disorienting and guiding us, these strategies interrogate power relations, social interactions, and spatial politics. Presented as a work-in-process, the exhibition will grow through spatial interventions and performative actions, taking place over five weeks.Participating artists and organizations include

Aeromoto, Fernanda Barreto, Anamaya Farthing-Kohl, Manuela García, Andrea Geyer, Interference Archive, Invasorix, Martha Rosler, Alex Schweder, and Nathalie Wuerth.

disorienting plans is curated by Gabriela López Dena and Andrea Ancira.

On-site action where a group of students at Parsons School of Design created roof tiles using their thighs as molds. The project is based on the popular Brazilian saying feito nas coxas (done on the thighs), which has roots in the country’s colonial past, when roof tiles were made on the thighs of enslaved black women.

No Swimsuit RequiredPublic Art Fund
New York, NY | 2024
No Swimsuit Required is an ongoing project featuring films, performances, and sound installations in New York City public pools during their off-season. The first iteration, Water Works, took place across two evenings in September 2024 and explored water as a thematic framework. These events were hosted at Hamilton Fish Pool–an Olympic-sized pool and architectural landmark on the Lower East Side–after it was drained following the summer season.
Conceived as an Expanded Cinema presentation utilizing multiple projectors and screens, Water Works features experimental 16mm and digital films that explore bodies of water, from vast oceans and serene rivers to turbulent seas stirred by ships and ordinary drips from a leaky faucet. The audience stepped inside the drained pool, explored the empty space, and lounged on sunbeds while encountering a diversity of moving image works, including ravishing seascapes and landscapes, hand-processed films, Structuralist cinema, and works with an ecocritical perspective. These films created an experiential atmosphere and showcased the myriad perspectives contained within moving image artists’ visions of water.
Film and video artworks were accompanied by live performances by sound artists Eli Keszler and Maria Chávez, who employed the films’ audio for their interventions. Water Works featured films by Stan Brakhage, Dietmar Brehm, James Cagle, Mary Helena Clark, Ivan Ladislav Galeta, David Gatten, Helena Gouveia Monteiro, Vincent Grenier, Friedl vom Gröller, Ann Deborah Levy, Abinadi Meza, Youjin Moon, Mary Beth Reed, Dan Perz, Chick Strand, Gao Wei, and Joyce Wieland. No Swimsuit Required is curated by Gabriela López Dena.

Water Works is a collaboration between Public Art Fund and The Film-Makers’ Cooperative; it was co-curated by Tom Day, Executive Director, NACG/The Film-Makers’ Cooperative and Gabriela López Dena, Associate Curator of Public Practice, Public Art Fund.

About the series
Pools and other social spaces to cool off in the height of summer have a long history in New York City and are an essential part of its public infrastructure. By 1890, the city had already built 15 floating baths along the Hudson and East Rivers. These structures provided safe bathing and swimming at the peak of industrialization. By the early 20th century, indoor bathhouses replaced floating baths, offering sanitation facilities for those living in overcrowded tenements. As the city transformed, bathhouses were no longer needed for hygiene purposes, but water continued to provide relief when the weather was hot and unbearable. Eventually, bathhouses, along with newly built outdoor pools from the Works Progress Administration era, became spaces to gather and play during the hottest time of the year. Currently, over 50 outdoor public pools within the five boroughs are utilized for swimming and other leisurely activities between June and early September. They typically remain inactive for the rest of the year.

No Swimsuit Required brings liveliness to New York City’s empty pools and celebrates these spaces as vital environments for social interaction.

Strategies for SurvivalWeeksville Heritage Center
Brooklyn, NY | 2021
Nine women from the Weeksville neighborhood in Brooklyn simultaneously read and performed a series of texts found in Weeksville Heritage Center's archive. Using Zoom breakout rooms, each woman live-streamed from a space that had been significant to her during 2020—a year that people around the world spent in lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A cozy kitchen, a neighborhood café, an improvised home office, and a Montessori school, among others, connected the content of the texts to the performers' professions and everyday lives. Zoom's format allowed audience members to move between the nine live streams over the course of one hour, each unfolding in a different physical space.
Strategies for Survival is curated by Gabriela López Dena.
This project received
the support of the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs and the Vera List Center for
Art and Politics at The New School, where an earlier version of Strategies for Survival was presented in 2018.

Feminist Manifestos Vera List Center for Art and PoliticsNew York, NY | 2018

A diverse group of women from across The New School—students, alumni, administrative and maintenance staff, union members, and faculty—read and performed historical and contemporary manifestos at various locations throughout the university, including classrooms, hallways, elevators, the cafeteria, and the library. Presented over the course of the day, the program ran from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The spaces in which they performed related to the content of the texts and played an important role in the performers' daily lives. For instance, Quenessa Barnes, working in the cafeteria, read a declaration on food sovereignty, and Caroline Garcia, an MFA student, developed a durational piece based on the Xenofeminist Manifesto in the gallery space. Through voice and movement, everyday spaces became sites for socio-political reflection, revealing the emancipatory potential of everyday activities and choices.

Feminist Manifestos is curated by Gabriela López Dena. The program was presented as part of the Vera List Center for Art and Politics series Freedom of Speech: A Curriculum for Studies Into Darkness, co-curated by Carin Kuoni and Laura Raicovich.

Bodily Book FormsPubic Art FundBrooklyn, NY | 2023
Inspired by Felipe Baeza’s Unruly Forms—a public exhibition of eight paintings installed in bus shelters and street furniture across the United States and Mexico—this series of free workshops in Sunset Park explored the relationship between the body and the book form. Both books and bodies act as vessels for stories, their forms shifting to accommodate what they hold.
Facilitated by Booklyn Inc, the sessions offered space for Sunset Park residents, visitors, and the Mixteca community to experiment with collage, pop-up structures, and binding techniques. Each participant developed a one-page book or zine that could be easily photocopied and multiplied, echoing the spirit of Baeza’s widely distributed Public Art Fund commission.Bodily Book Forms was curated by Gabriela López Dena.

Mobile Print Power at Rockaway BeachPublic Art Fund Queens, NY | 2024
Rockaway Beach is a unique urban coastline that is home to 120,000 residents, host to myriad wildlife species, and a popular destination for millions of visitors who enjoy activities like surfing, swimming, and sunbathing. How do visitors and residents create communities that consider this complex ecology? How can leisure in shared spaces catalyze meaningful connections?

In the summer of 2024, the multi-generational Queens-based artist collective Mobile Print Power (MPP) and Public Art Fund explored how residents and visitors alike experience Rockaway Beach. Through a series of hands-on open workshops, MPP used their participatory design methodology and portable silkscreen printmaking carts to connect with communities along the beach and boardwalk. With their collaborative process, MPP co-created new graphic works based on participants’ sense of place.
Mobile Print Power at Rocakway Beach was curated by Gabriela López Dena.
