A diverse group of women from across The New School—students, alumni, administrative and maintenance staff, union members, and faculty—read and performed historical and contemporary manifestos at various locations throughout the university, including classrooms, hallways, elevators, the cafeteria, and the library. Presented over the course of the day, the program ran from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The spaces in which they performed related to the content of the texts and played an important role in the performers' daily lives. For instance, Quenessa Barnes, working in the cafeteria, read a declaration on food sovereignty, and Caroline Garcia, an MFA student, developed a durational piece based on the Xenofeminist Manifesto in the gallery space. Through voice and movement, everyday spaces became sites for socio-political reflection, revealing the emancipatory potential of everyday activities and choices.


Feminist Manifestos is curated by Gabriela López Dena. The program was presented as part of the Vera List Center for Art and Politics series Freedom of Speech: A Curriculum for Studies Into Darkness, co-curated by Carin Kuoni and Laura Raicovich.
